I don't use an axe, but I have one sitting around for the fun of whacking things occasionally.
The old-timers would use a double bit axe so they could keep one side sharp. The other side was used when a branch was against the dirt or whatever. There would be a notch carved in the handle, so they knew by feel which edge was which.
