I am replacing some light fixtures in our older house. The wires coming from the ceiling are two thicker wires, not the copper smaller wires. How do I attach these to the wire nut and the light fixture. Do I need a larger wire nut? Also there is no ground wire that I can see. Thanks for the help. I am no electrician

Are these heavier wires insulated with cloth, not plastic? Sounds like knob and tube wiring. Never worked with it so I don't know how they terminated it when hooking it to fixtures or switches. The Wago connectors seem like the best connector for this as long as they are sized for both size wires.

My old farm house in IA was knob and tube with cloth insulation. As long as it is kept dry and away from rodents it is fine for lighting. It's probably more than a normal #14. You just need to maintain the separation by taking the new wires to the old and not bringing the old one together.
