I always thought that "open source" and "free software" implied, at minimum, power-user level computer proficiency. Or a curiosity and willingness to research and learn on one's own.
I think we can agree that we have to be vigilant about who the gatekeepers are for systems and data, and then do a risk assessment to determine if we're comfortable using their services. Millions of people don't want to get into the technical details and are fine with Microsoft, Apple, or others handling certain things. Managing signed software, cryptography, baseline security configurations, and data syncing, for example. If that doesn't work for you, then you've stepped off the common path and must learn how to go about it yourself. I don't think either method is inherently wrong.
I guess I don't understand exactly what your complaint is. Fortunately, we have options in our tech.
