Either plain like it is or my wife likes to make such type fish into something that resembles tuna salad by chopping it up and adding relish and mayo. She will take sardines (which can be mackerel) and Kipper snacks (smoked mackerel), mixed them together and makes a tuna type salad out of the two together.
