This makes the most sense. Little rabbits will hide under things if spooked, and can easily get scooped up if one were to grab the laundry pile. My daughters raised rabbits for 4-H projects, and when scared, they hide and freeze unless actively chased, I assume a cottontail wouldn't be any different.
