The dead rye will wick moisture out of the ground and the cracks in the soil will lose more moisture than if it was lightly tilled causing a dry mulch on top. Just another way of looking at it.


I’m doing the rye cover and no till as well because I think long term it builds better soil, but I will agree with Yanny to some extent. I have seen ground that was field cultivated that sealed the top after a rain and stayed much wetter underneath. It also crusts worse because of the fine silt particles.
