What model of printer? Some printers seem to have a direct wireless connection to the specific device, but some connect to a network wirelessly and the devices connect to it through the network. I haven't used a hotspot on an iPad much, but I'm wondering if that could be the issue as the printer may be looking for a more conventional network.
