The combination of a solid stem variety AND a foliar insecticide around early stem elongation has really helped reduce sawfly. No university will advocate foliar insecticides because the timing is difficult to determine and the control can be variable, but I have seen fields treated with alternating passes of an insecticide, and almost no sawfly was present in the treated strips compared to significant damage in the non treated.
