sw ontario
For those not born into or have outside resources farming now is pretty much a closed shop. A lot of the land prices have been pushed by 2nd & 3 rd. generation Europeon descendants. It worked good in the end as many who came right after WW 11 settled in the areas with good land that was growing high labour crops, they worked hard, saved and bought some of that good ground Also most were livestock guys.
A late mentor Roger & his brother came from Belgium after ww 11 , either late teens or real early 20 yrs. old as they knew that there opportunities to fam in Belgium was limited. Roger told me that if you are young and see no future here one needs to look at immigrating to a place that offers what you want. Most multi generation Canadians are content to just slide along without risking much.
Here in Essex cty. land a yr. ago (just beans/corn/wheat) was around $10k -- now its $20k+.
Idk how much money is in growing veggies in greenhouses but just west of me there is several who have spent $100 million and up to grow cucs, tomatoes, peppers to export to the US
Sparkie u are right about land becoming same as Europe
