Clean breather vent hole in dirt caked below the button. That being clogged will sometimes allow it to start but die immediately. Other times if a mud dauber has sealed it, it won’t even start.

As others have mentioned, you’re not getting enough vacuum to open the demand/final stage of the regulator. Pushing on the button does this manually and primes the engine with vapor the same way as choking a carburetor.

Could be vaporizer needs a new diaphragm, (take off cover with about 8 screws , unhook diaphragmbracket from valve lever inside and then inspect for holes)

hose between vaporizer and mixer(carb) is leaky (wrap with electrical tape from end to end)

mixer diaphragm is leaky (IMPCO mixers have top held on by about 6 screws, take them off and inspect diaphragm for holes ….. while it’s off spray carb cleaner down mixer body to remove crud that may cause valve attached to bottom of diaphragm to hang up)

or engine isn’t producing enough vacuum for some reason.

There are kits for IMPCO vaporizer and mixer. That’s a model J vaporizer. They’re not hard to put in, but I’ve been doing them for 40 years, so I don’t have to read the directions any more!
