We had one, and only one, of those beasts on a truck. If I remember correctly there might be a bolt or rod under the back of the plate on the jaws, or it sticks out the side ?? you can set how loose it starts out at. I do remember there are teeth on both halfs of the jaws/ sliding plates, when they are stripped off it wont keep the halfs locked in place and you need to buy new ones. I would bet that is your problem the teeth are gone.That contraption also cost us a king pin in a trailer because it always was tightening up. If you unhook from the trailer when it is cold, like 20 to 30 below zero, that sucker will not latch back up for love nor money. Our Kenworth dealer had Jost 5th wheels on an introductory special price and that is what "fixed" it.
