Thanks for the suggestions and ideas but it sounds like this is beyond my skills and knowledge. I tried running the Asus recovery disks I'd made years ago and the first one did run and load something. Starting windows screen came up but then it went back to  blue screen. Its spinning disks and putting a lot of heat out the fan vent but thats about all now.
