Subject: Derate Engine

Hello, I am looking to buy a second hand truck with an L10 Cummins rated at 300hp. The truck is a bit bigger than we need initially, and not being an engine guru, I would like to know if we have the engine derated to say 250hp by a diesel mechanic, will there be a noticable fuel saving? Also say everything else is equal, if the engine is running at 1500rpm, will the engine save fuel derated to 250hp, than if it was running 1500rpm at 300hp, or are the savings at higher end rpm?

The loads initially will be about 70% capacity, so I don't think it will need all that hp.

Thank you.
