I would be jacking up each side and put your hand on the axle. Have someone let the jack down and feel for any movement. I am guessing if it is as bad as you describe, you will not need to put your hand on the axle and will hear a clunk, when letting the jack down. I would almost think your axle seal would be leaking, if it is bad enough.
