An air compressor starts hard. Especially with phase converters. A little different idea but along the same line. I have a 5 hp air compressor and used to have a 10hp phase converter in my shop. That would barely start the compressor. Especially if it was very cold. Now, I have a 15 hp phase converter, it works ok, but still, sometimes on the first start of a day, I have to hit the starting capacitor circuit to get it going. Conversely, the 10 hp converter would start the 10 hp lathe with all the drive transmission stuff starting at the same time. So, figure a compressor takes the starting current of a motor 3 times bigger.
