Subject: RE: What is the smallest generator that will start 1 HP motor?

Statesville, NC
I bought a used Northern tool generator about a year ago to run an aeration fan on a grain bin. The fan is 3hp and the generator is rated at 6600 watts continuous and 8000 surge. It's all it can do to start the fan, but it does it. You can tell when the starting circuit kicks out, it runs very easy after that. Something interesting, the engine is rated at 13 horsepower, but now if you go on the Honda website they are rating at 11 hp. There are some new standards out to get the small engine manufacturers to show more realistic ratings. Many of the Briggs engines are now rated in foot pounds of torque instead of horsepower.
