Aberdeen MS | When the planter goes up and down the field...... "usually" the row will leave a slight divit or depression in the field. The roller doesn't move enough soil to depress into that area. You are basically rolling the "inbetween" row bringing it down closer to the row "elevation" if you will.
In order to effectively move the residue on the acres I direct planted and strip tilled as well this spring....I move a bit more soil with the openers than I cared to and after rolling the field kind of looks like a ridge tilled field. Only it's in reverse.
When I checked after rolling, the actual row was for the most part untouched, except where the tractor didn't stay on row, and that isn't the roller's fault.
In my strip crop experiment....I even went over the planted corn portion where the corn was in "spike" stage and I saw no evidence at that point that the spiked corn was touched.
