Subject: Re: JD 4640 Question

Leesburg, Ohio
The '78 4640 was the first new tractor Dad and i bought together after I came home from college. Ordered it as a 4630, but when it came in, it was the first 40 series that the dealer got. Great tractor! Traded it on an 8300 in the late 90's to get fwa, and almost cried when it left.

Had to replace the fuel tank, like was mentioned above. Had to rebuild the differential once, found out that we should have been running the hydraulic/transmission oil level a half inch ABOVE the full mark on the dipstick...Deere said when plowing deep, running in the furrow (which we did alot of at the time) letting the oil get down to the add mark would starve the left side axle and differential bearings. Never had another problem after that. The range shift (abcd) was less forgiving than the small-frame tractors as far as grinding...had to be completely stopped, which is normal with a quad-range anyway. Lots easier to shift than the other color (IMHO).
