we also dont tag at birth except the sick ones. our cows calve in the fall and before we take them to winter pasture on stalks we implant and vac. and thats when we give the bull and hfr. calves different colored tags makes sorting alot easier later on. When I go out feed and check on them daily when on stocks I keep an eye out for any pairs and write them down and before long i got a list of the mojority of momma/ calf numbers. Ive just never been a fan of messing with them at birth just keep a good eye on them and let mother nature and bossy handle things.
