South Central IL
I will soon have the same delima, currently work full time, 2011 will work and farm but will quit job and farm full time in 2012. (dad retiring) Figured my first year or two will have hands full but will soon become bored in off seasons.

Have considered trucking, electrician, welding/fabrication, dry fert application, dirt work of some kind. Can do all of these but would need to go to school for electrician.

Here are my thoughts:

1. Cannot be too ag related. If agriculture isn't booming I don't want my second source of income hurt also.
2. Must be something I can shut down during planting and harvest season. (if ag related would probably need attention in spring and fall)
3. Must be something I enjoy.
4. Don't want employees to manage. (do that at my job and hate it)
5. Would prefer minimal capitol investment to start.

Will most likely take first winter and go to local college for electrician classes (could use around the farm also) and carpentry 101 stuff. Know plenty of carpenters that always need a little help.
