NE Iowa | Snapped some random pictures of our cattle this morning. No particular reason other then our operation is a little different then most I see pictures of on here. From NE Iowa in the hills along the Mississippi. We have about 30 cows, finish out the calves, and raise our own replacments. Have 7 new calves so far this year from 6 cows (1 set of twins). Herd started in 1977 when Grandpa converted from dairy. More for stress relief and hobby then it is for money. Pasture is very limited so don't have the luxury of tearing up a calving pasture and have no pasture by the buildings. Almost 100% of the calves are born in a shed and cows have access to buildings all winter. Only have enough pasture for 3/4 of the cows and then it is only from May 1st to end of September. Most of the cows are at least 3/4 Simmental. First beef bull was a shorthorn, then 2 Limousin, then 2 Gelbvieh, and the last 7 or so have been Simmental (some red but most were black).
Picture order:
1st: My dad with family pet - 10 year old cow that was born 6 weeks premature and was only 25# at birth so raised on a bottle
2nd - 4th: Random cows with new calves
5th: 2009 heifer calves that are being raised as replacements
6th: 2009 steer calves in feedlot 10-12 months old, on self feeder, and weaned since November
7th: Red Simmental Bull that is about 5 years old and probably will be his last year
