There is nothing I can think of that is more challenging and at the same time rewarding as running a dairy.

That being said, I think most people who do it are raised in it and are too stubborn (or dumb or both) to try anything else


My wife and I started shipping milk the fall of 2022. At least a generation removed from milking cows on either side. Decided we wanted to milk cows, and did it.

We ship grade B milk to a cheese plant, milking ~20 cows, mostly Brown Swiss. We grow all our own feed which helps, and we do all our own work, chopping, combining, manure hauling, planting, ect. Farming a little over 300 acres as well

We get good money for Swiss bull calves, heifers have good value as well. Herd shares help too. We actually make more money with the milk cows than we did as cow/calf with the same number of cows

I like that I can see how everything works and how every little management thing has a effect. It's a lot of work, especially when I'm still working full time off farm, my wife is in pharmacy school as well.
