CNY | Here question is more like when did the dairies explode. County I live in (Cayuga) is one of the top 50 dairy counties in the US. Guessing 40-50,000 dairy cows in our county. 5 mile circle around my house there’s 15,000. Wasn’t really that many here until the late 80s early 90s. There wasn’t much money in grain and vegetables/dry beans kind of phased out. Most of the farms around here are 2nd or 3rd generation. Some sold land by NYC/Connecticut in the 70s-80s moved up here. There’s more farms with over 1000 cows than there are with less. None are corporate- many are LLCs but owned by a family or several families in partnership | |
