I don't know if it's the debt load, a different management style, or just farmers complaining they don't make money when they actually do, but I can make more profit dairy farming vs grain farming. There's only been a few years recently where I could match my take home pay by grain farming. I have some newer pieces of machinery, but every tractor is over 10k hours. Our parlor has been updated many times, but the building is from 1980. If another generation wants to take over it will need to be replaced. I would also expand the herd at that point. I think that may be the biggest issue with dairy farms. They need to expand a little bit every 5-10 years if they plan on keeping the dairy going long term, partly for the income but also to make sure you're large enough for a milk company to pick you up.
