Dad and I only have 200 acres, his uncles kept 250 when we bought them out in 2010. we gross $3500 and acre by dairy farming on this land, 3 people make a living off of 200 acres. been milking here since 1938 and it is in our blood. I feel a responsibility to take care of our herd, you have to live it and love it to know the answer. i see lots of guys comment on here that they are glad they don't milk anymore. if thats how they feel then its good they quit. especially for the cows. would life be easy to just cash crop 1-2000 acres, absolutely, easiest most relaxing farm life there is. just not easy to do around here.
