Not a suggestion....
Dad told of a neighbor long ago who had the hired man sit out in the shed and straighten buckets of used/bent nails and thread rusty bolts (stuff bought at auction sales for cheap) in the winter after the chores were done to keep them busy all day until the evening chores.
