The latest Windows 11 has a setting that stops the install of any software not from the Microsoft store.
Current versions will allow you to turn this off, after jumping through a number of hoops but no doubt in the future you won't be able to do that. Then free software and other companies won't be available without paying Microsoft a fee. The end of free and open source software.
