East Central Ia | We ended up getting a chance to spray our rye and planted into it three days later.
We were originally concerned about termination of the rye with very cold temps, I believe we had a frost a few days before this was sprayed. We were burned pretty hard several years ago in a similar situation and were trying to decide if we should do some tillage. Our previous “learning experience” was before we had a liquid system on the planter, I believe that made a world of difference. That and the week of 90 degree temps we had to get the corn out of the ground fast.
Long story short we ended up leaving it and planting into it green.
Rye was seeded at 35lbs/ac with our VT tool that has a Gandy seeder box on it. We blow the seed out the back right in front of the rolling baskets. This has worked excellent.
We planted this with our DB60 36R20” planter. We have Dawn GFX row cleaners with Yetter shark tooth blades on them, and Yetter poly twister closing wheels.
We applied 20gpa dribbled out the back on both sides of the row of a 80/20 32% UAN/ATS blend, the balance of the fertilizer is from fall applied hog manure.
I would say this farm doesn’t look as good as the rest of corn which had smaller rye at planting time, but overall I don’t anticipate a yield reduction.
Sprayed 5-5 and planted 5-9
The smaller corn is from 5-30
The tall corn is from today 6-16
