Has anyone successfully cut out excessive salt and sugar out of their diet?

For example: soda, potato chips, adding salt to your food, ice cream, ketchup, bbq sauce, ect.....

i dont think extremes are good and to cut them out completely would limit you to no fruit as they have natural sugars. but i do think in this country we have a bunch of unnecessary salt and sugar in our diet. 

it wouldnt be too hard to do if you consistently had meat, potatoes, veggies, fruit, unsweetened tea, eggs.... stuff like that to eat all the time and just cut out the extra salt and sugar. do you think we would be that much more healthy? 

obviously there would be exceptions for eating out at restaurants and others homes...
