What is your internet source; cable, phone, sat, broadband, cell data?

From all of those goes to a modem, first box. Some modems are also routers so it could be a combo modem/ router. Do you own this box, or typically the internet company does.

From the modem comes a wire similar to a phone cord, this can go to a single computer, or it can go to a router which typically sends out a wireless WiFi signal as well as having 4 ports to hook up wired items.

The modem takes goofy tones and creates data a computer can understand.

A router takes that understandable signal and controls connecting several different devices to each other as well as to the internet as needed.

You have a modem.

You might not have a router if you have a wire directly into your computer!
