Driftless SW Wisconsin | You are correct in that the early planted corn really benefits from the warmer black cleared strip. Iowa State did a study on this years ago on soil temp and emergence vs width of cleared path. However another benefit for corn and later planted crops is the more uniform seed depth provided when the row unit gage wheels are running on a cleared smoother surface. Joe is correct about the single wheel not being reaaly what you want too use for planting 30" corn. Our single wheel model uses a cast iron extension bar to bring the single wheel forward a bit more than just the front hole. We usually only use a single wheel on 15" planters planting 15" beans into worked corn stalks. Many folks mount our 1572 coulter combo on the corn rows of splitter panters then a coulter only on the bean splitter rows. Then between corn and beans they just raise or lower the trashwheels of the combo. On 15" you are then coulters only allacross with duble trashwheels for planting corn. Nothing to take on or off between crops just raise or lower the tw on the corn rows with a driver drill and socket. the coulter on the 1572 can e easily removed. In your area I like to use Trashwheels only when planting corn. Best of luck. Jim at Dawn | |
