Be tough and fair with them, as the work ethic they develop now will carry on to their careers. I used to tell mine that their next boss may be easier, may be harder, more or less fair, but be prepared to do what I expected, be explicit or implied. Be on time, be ready to work. Listen, ask questions, be involved.
I love working young people. They have a different world facing them, and we have a responsibility to set fine examples for them. They are very impressionable, and from you there is just as much caught as taught. They're very interesting and exciting to learn from, and occasionally the one you get who becomes very very interested in agriculture is a bonus. I have had some ask question after question after question, and had a couple go in to agriculture full time out of school. Now that is a fulfilling thought, know that mine was the first ag job they ever had....
