It's cheaper in the long run to produce non-precious metal coins than paper currency. Spent a year overseas and everything $5 and under was a coin. They outlast paper many times over, or so we were told. Kinda sucks when you pull out your keys and about $35 worth of $5 coins spills on the ground.
