Subject: RE: John Deere 7200 Furrow Opener Questions?

Driftless SW Wisconsin

If by JD Furrow openers you mean the JD attachment with two discs, solid OD or notched OD or one of each, your first tip of should be the name.

Note they are called FURROW openers, not row cleaners.

The challenge for a row cleaner is usually to clear residue without moving much soil.

Think about the percent open area in the outer 2" or so of any tool that engages the residue and/or soil.

If you have a pile of straw on the floor of the barn, what tool would you choose to move it? Usually folks would choose a rake of a pitchfork - something with teeth.

If you have a pile of soil on the floor of the barn, what tool would you choose to move it? Usually folks would choose a shovel or a hoe - something solid.

There is a range of middle ground but that is the basics.

If your ground is flat enough you may be able to get by using the furrow opener disks as a row cleaner. Usually however you will end up gouging soil in some places. These were originally designed to use in old style ridgetill or beds where the object was to move soil and create a furrow.

Good luck.
