Subject: RE: 88 series IH

My 52 is a late 84 model and I have thought about trying to put a MFWD axle under it. I don't think that it would be too big of a job if a person could find a late model donor tractor with a bad engine or trans for a reasonable price. Our local IH mechanic may very well be the best on this side of the Mississippi River. He just flat out knows the IH's inside and out. A neighbor of ours has a fwd 5488 that is so stout that it is unreal. He claims that it is turning over 300 HP. I don't know about that but I have seen it pull 7-18's so fast that it was hard to steer it down the furrow. That was in some pretty heavy ground and plowing 12" deep or more. I hope that your neighbor gets her fixed without it getting too expensive. Those 88s are darn good old machines. Have a good one, C.E. Sherman
