Subject: Re: North central north dakota flood

s.c. north dakota
I live about 5 miles east of Steele and the water was over the road about 1 1/2 mile east of Steele. When 94 was built, the engineers had cut a drainage ditch across my neighbors pasture and had put a couple approaches in it with 30" culverts in them. The current batch of DOT boys didn't even know that the ditch was there, we had to tell them about it. The culverts were full of ice and the ditch was 10-15 feet deep with snow. They brought in a couple track hoes and dug the snow out and ripped out the culverts. Boy, without the culverts to restrict the flow, I got water coming my way in about 30 minutes. It is starting to wash out my stock dam and the county road that has 3 3' culverts in it. DOT has offered to help the county fix the road, I hope to get some help with my dam. The water came so fast it came up in my alfalfa field that I have my excess hay stored on. I now have at least 100 bales sitting in water. Rob D
