If it won't stand up to having (2) 1/4" holes drilled in the center of the top flange, then it probably shouldn't be on the road.  Just like other structural members - like joists in a building, small holes in the center of the structural part don't cause problems, just large holes or holes that aren't in or near the center.  I'd drill them.
