Subject: Grain Bin Site Planning

Regina/ 14 miles South of Moose Jaw Saskatchewan
Looking for some experienced opinions on re-vamping our grain storage. Currently have 8 2000bu hopper bins around one building, and 12 flat bottom bins at another location set more or less back to back. Flat bottoms range from 2x5,000 bu, 3,300 bu, & most others from 1,500 to 2000 bu. Small bins are a legacy from older days - but they fit our organic grain system fairly well.

Was looking at re-arranging in the yard, mainly to get away from slopes & tilts when the truck backs up to the auger, (some settling on the hoppers in their current site means doing something soon anyway)... am thinking of leveling one area with good load/unload access, & moving all bins (all but one are on movable foundations.)

Have seen some plans that show the bins arranged in 1 or more semi-circles... - can see the advantage of one "pit" to unload in - assume you unload from the outside of the ring? - Curious about the advantages/disadvantages if anyone has that set up?

Don't really see a leg being justified in our size of operation - was pretty well thinking auger in/out, possibly a vac for the flat bottoms...

We natural air(electric/solar assist) aerate 7 of the existing bins - depending on crops and the year we have to figure on in/out twice at harvest on some of the bins...

Since I'm just atthe blue sky stage, would really appreciate any comments/suggestions/ etc. on how you'd set up a new site with existing bins (or at least what to avoid!)

Many thanks

Doug W.
