Tim 1/2 mile range will be fine. Can u see the dog at a 1/2 mi? Can he hear u at 1/2, see where I`m going?I`m sure your wife has a program lined up,Remember the dog has to learn the commands in conventional ways then conditioned to them with the collar.Good luck! Jim
