Itta Bena Mississippi | The water and soap is needed to lubricate the spindle so the cotton will come off at the doffer. It's wiped on by the neoprene moisture pads as the spindles pass through the moisture column. The cotton is then removed by the doffers and spun into the air duct. The doffer is about 8' in diameter and are staccked 20 to a shaft and spin opposite direction of the bars. Doffers are made of neoprene also and are lugged to allow the cotton to be released. properly set, there's just of thouandths clearance between the spindle and doffer and the moisture pad should just make contact with the spindle. The bar height on the drum is critical for all of this theory to work right. That requires a tool built with a dial indicator, several different shims, and a lot of patience and good eyesight. Unfortunately, those last 2 are getting away from me.
