Our Thompson wheel isn't a "spiked" wheel -- the spokes have tapering sides (triangular), which self-limits the depth. The Thompson wheels have far less tendency to go too deep as compared to some on the market with a very narrow non-tapered spokes. And, in fact, we have a great many customers who are quite pleased with their seed placement using 2 Thompson wheels per row. If less aggressive action is needed, as for very shallow planting (or loose soils -- e.g., tilled), the spring pressure can be reduced which makes the wheel very controllable.
