Central Kansas
These are pretty reliable older pivot tongue windrowers. You need the conditioner rolls and they are pricey...but if the rest of the machine is in good shape, it would make a nice outfit for you. I use one for more acres than that and it works fine. You didn't give size but most likely a 14' or 16' machine.

The pump box, if PTO power was used a lot to unplug the windrower, can have some deformed splines inside. Check that out and determine if it is 1,000 or 540. To replace that inner spline part is about $600 with new end cap, seals, etc. Most likely it is okay. The next biggest wear item are the 'dog bones' that the pitman ocillates on....see if they are worn (bushings will be shot). These are not real expensive but they don't give them away. Chains from the gear boxes on the right side (standing behind) should be checked along with the sprockets.

This is a double sickle machine and it will take special sickle sections on the overlapping ends in the middle. You will probably want to replace the guards and rebuild the sickles...and that isn't a cheap deal either. Height adjustment is by 4 skid plates under the head.....has a pin and clip so you can move the skids up/down. There is a shaft with 2 U-joints running from the hydraulic motor to the right side of the machine. You should check out these U-joints.

These were well designed machines and will cut a lot of hay if they are maintained and repaired as they need it. In this neck of the woods...a good one is $6-7,000. They are heavy and if you swing them wildly they can jerk a light tractor around pretty good. A 4020 JD will operate one just fine...so you do not need the horses a disc-type machine requires in this size. Good luck.
