Subject: cotton

Driftless SW Wisconsin

Mark,

I am very familiar with cotton. It presents a lot of planter challenges!

Even though the mature plant is a tough woody, tree-like stalk, as an emerging seedling the plant is weak and does not emerge well thru a crust. This is one reason the IH squeeze disk and Chevron tire has been popular. The Chevron tire leaves a pattern that can crack open so the seed can emerge.

Cotton is also planted very shallow (1/2" - 3/4" max) and the seed is very expensive. It is worthwhile to do a good job of seeding, seed to soil contact and crust prevention.
