You don't need a passport for land crossings into the US until June 2009 I believe but it sure makes things easier . Travelling by air you definitely need a passport today.

Get the Canadian seller to bring it to the Customs port for you, it will make it so much easier. Even if you have to drive into the Canadian side to pick it up and import it to the US yourself.

But if you can get them to deliver it 100 feet into the US it is easier yet, even if you are there to handle any paperwork snafus.
