Dutch, Van can explain this a lot better than I can. Based on my experience (and I may have just been blessed) I wouldn't worry too much trying to disable things in the Startup list one thing at at time and restarting. HOWEVER having said that first I would run each startup item through Google and see what comes up. Sometimes it is easy (like checking out ctfmon) and sometimes it is difficult (like checking out WESCOMM. It is used by Active Sync for talking to my iPaq. It's also a pay telephone company, a Wild and Endangered Species Committee, Walla Walla Emergency Services Communications, and a whole bunch of other stuff) My computers are both on selective startup with the system.ini file and win.ini file checked and I am very cautious about playing with them.
