For networking today, Cat 5e is the standard. You could put direct burial cable directly in the ground. The 100 ft should not be an issue, like Ed said it will go 100 meters (328 feet)

Jorn's idea of putting a pull string inside a conduit is a good one though, especially if you don't konw what your future needs will be. Here are some thoughts about what you may now or later want to run:
For computer networking, for the forseable future, 1 Cat5e line should give you all the capacity you will need between two houses. For POTS (plain old telephone service) you can run 4 lines on one Cat5e. You may also consider coax for video. For mega fast networking, some are putting in fiber optic, but I personally think that is overkill now.

While you can pretty quick and easy throw in 2-3 Cat5e cables (direct burial will probably run you about $150 for 1000 feet), the benefit of doing the conduit, is you can do whatever you want in the future. One word of caution, if you do direct burial make sure you use conduit to protect the cable from weedeaters, etc. where it comes out of the ground along the building.
