Lac qui Parle County Minnesota
We were there about three years ago. We stayed at a dairy farm bed and breakfast near the town of Bayeux. Very nice people, great breakfast and always fresh milk. Anyway, we did a self guided tour. Near Bayeux is a German cemetery, that is interesting to walk through. Makes you realize that both sides lost young men.
The Pegasus Bridge on the Caen Canal is very interesting. The original bridge was replaced with a larger bridge that looks like the original. The original is a little ways off at the museum, bullet holes and all. Interesting stories about Capt Howard and his gliders, with an actual glider there.
The mulberrys can still be scene at Arromanches and another good museum.
Point du Hoc is a must. The ground is still cratered from all the shelling and you can go inside some of the pillboxes. One of them is used for an observation platform, so you can see what great sight lines the Germans had.
Carentan was another interest place, the famous town square fountain from the 101st airborne picture is still there.
Sainte Mere Eglise is a must. Has a replica paratrooper hanging from the roof. A great musuem. The church stain glass windows were blown out during the fighting. The new ones have images of paratroopers in them as a tribute.
Utah beach was probably the closest to actually looking like it did 70 years ago. A lot of the pillboxes and machine gun pits are still there. Some interesting museums there, also.
We also took the time to go to Bostogne. Very good musuem and a nice monument to the battle.
You'll also notice these white markers everywhere, marking where they found fallen soldiers. Makes you think about what was happening there in 1944.
Of course, an absolute must is the American cemetery off Omaha beach. Very solemn and very beautiful.
If you interested in military history, Normandy is a great place and great people there.
