3406 engines are readily available. We have two that are runners and prob 10 in baskets for parts.
So I think in the Panther it was an A and I would install a B. Just get a B with after cooler (Steigers did not have after cooler I believe) out of a truck and change out the externals.
If it were me I would pull on rod and one main bearing just to ck the bearings assuming the engine runs decent.
I would prob just go and change all the bearings as they are not expensive.
I would certainly change front and rear seals. And when I had the pan off I would prob inspect the oil pump.
Prob change the water pump also.
3406B should be bought for $2500 or even less. I know a guy that cuts a lot of trucks and he prob has 20. They test run every engine. If it runs out good they set it aside. If it has issues it goes to core for resale. | |
