Subject: RE: 863 v. 1063 cornhead

Boone, Iowa
We had a 963 and currently have a 1083 head. I remember that our 963 had a recall on the gearboxes after we had it. I was thinking that it was something to do with a snap ring that could come off. We never had any gearbox problems, just keep an eye on oil level if you see one start leaking. Our 1083 has been pretty bulletproof. We have had the gearbox driveshafts break on both heads. Keep antisieze on the rods that are on the spring tensioner for the front gathering chain sprocket. Every year, we loosen up the nut and free up that front bracket the sprocket bolts to and then readjust. The only thing I do not like about these heads is the time consuming job of replacing and adjusting the knives. Look to see if the snapping rolls have been updated to the water pump style bearing. If not, you will have grease zerks for every roll at the back of the head and suppose to lube them twice a day.
