While the motor is running take a small piece of metal, like a 1/4 inch nut or small metal screw driver. Hold the small metal object to the bearing on the back side of the alternator. There should be a magnetic field there. It may not hold the object, but you should be able to feel the magnetic feel wanting to pull the object from your hand or pull as you move the object away from the alternator.
